[985] "Venerable sir, in this matter I do not go by faith (saddhā) in the Blessed One: that the faculty of faith (saddhindriya) … the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya), developed and cultivated, merges in the Deathless (amata), has the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation. For those, venerable sir, by whom this has not been known, not seen, not understood, not realized, not seen with wisdom (paññā) — they would go by faith in others in this matter: that the faculty of faith … the faculty of wisdom, developed and cultivated, merges in the Deathless, has the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation. But those, venerable sir, by whom this has been known, seen, understood, realized, and seen with wisdom — they are free from perplexity, free from doubt in this matter: that the faculty of faith … the faculty of wisdom, developed and cultivated, merges in the Deathless, has the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation. And by me, venerable sir, this has been known, seen, understood, realized, and seen with wisdom; I am free from perplexity, free from doubt in this matter: that the faculty of faith … the faculty of wisdom, developed and cultivated, merges in the Deathless, has the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation."
