[407] **Not one of faith, he does not become dispassionate** (na saddho na virajjati): "Not one of faith" — the Dhamma directly known by himself, evident to himself, he does not believe on account of anyone else, whether an ascetic, a brahmin, a deva, Māra, or Brahmā. The Dhamma directly known by himself, evident to himself — "All conditioned things (saṅkhārā) are impermanent" — he does not believe on account of anyone else, whether an ascetic, a brahmin, a deva, Māra, or Brahmā. "All conditioned things are suffering (dukkha)." "All dhammas are not-self." "With ignorance (avijjā) as condition, volitional formations [come to be]" ... "With birth as condition, aging-and-death [comes to be]." "With the cessation of ignorance comes the cessation of volitional formations" ... "With the cessation of birth comes the cessation of aging-and-death." "This is suffering" ... "This is the practice leading to the cessation of suffering." "These are the taints (āsava)" ... "This is the practice leading to the cessation of the taints." "These dhammas are to be directly known" ... "These dhammas are to be realized." The origin, the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to the six bases of contact (phassāyatana); the origin, the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to the five aggregates subject to clinging; the origin, the passing away, the gratification, the danger, and the escape in regard to the four great elements (mahābhūta); "Whatever is subject to origination, all that is subject to cessation" — this Dhamma directly known by himself, evident to himself, he does not believe on account of anyone else, whether an ascetic, a brahmin, a deva, Māra, or Brahmā.
For this was said by the Blessed One: "Do you have faith, Sāriputta, that the faculty of faith (saddhindriya), when developed and cultivated, has the Deathless as its ground, the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation; that the faculty of energy ... the faculty of mindfulness ... the faculty of concentration ... the faculty of wisdom, when developed and cultivated, has the Deathless as its ground, the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation?"
"Venerable sir, in this matter I do not go by faith in the Blessed One that the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom, when developed and cultivated, has the Deathless as its ground, the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation. Those, venerable sir, by whom this has not been known, not been seen, not been understood, not been realized, not been contacted with wisdom — they, surely, would go by faith in others in this matter, that the faculty of faith ... the faculty of wisdom, when developed and cultivated, has the Deathless as its ground, the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation. But those, venerable sir, by whom this has been known, seen, understood, realized, and contacted with wisdom — they are without perplexity, without doubt in this matter, that the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom, when developed and cultivated, has the Deathless as its ground, the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation. And by me, venerable sir, this has been known, seen, understood, realized, and contacted with wisdom; I am without perplexity, without doubt in this matter, that the faculty of faith, the faculty of energy, the faculty of mindfulness, the faculty of concentration, the faculty of wisdom, when developed and cultivated, has the Deathless as its ground, the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation."
"Good, good, Sāriputta! Those, Sāriputta, by whom this has not been known, not been seen, not been understood, not been realized, not been contacted with wisdom — they would go by faith in others in this matter, that the faculty of faith ... the faculty of wisdom, when developed and cultivated, has the Deathless as its ground, the Deathless as its destination, the Deathless as its consummation."
The person who is without faith, who knows the Unmade,
who has cut the connection, who has destroyed the opportunity,
who has expelled hope — he indeed is the supreme person.
**He does not become dispassionate** (na virajjati): all foolish worldlings become impassioned; the seven trainees (sekha), together with the good worldling, become dispassionate; the arahant neither becomes impassioned nor becomes dispassionate. He is one who has abstained: through the destruction of lust (rāga), because he is devoid of lust; through the destruction of hatred (dosa), because he is devoid of hatred; through the destruction of delusion (moha), because he is devoid of delusion. He has lived the life, completed the conduct, ... for him there is no renewed existence. Thus, "not one of faith, he does not become dispassionate." Therefore the Blessed One said:
Not flowing after pleasant things, and not given to arrogance,
gentle and of ready wit — he is not one of faith, he does not become dispassionate.
