[105] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Veḷuvana, the Squirrels' Feeding Ground. Now at that time the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan (Sakyaputta) was a frequenter of a certain family (kulūpaka), a recipient of regular meals. Whatever hard food or soft food arose in that family, a portion of it was set aside for the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan. Now at that time meat had arisen in that family in the evening, and a portion of it was set aside for the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan. The boy of that family, waking in the night at the time of dawn, cried out: "Give me meat!" Then that man said to his wife: "Give the master's portion to the boy; having procured something else, we shall give it to the master."
Then in the morning the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan, having dressed and taking his bowl and robe, approached that family; having approached, he sat down on the seat prepared for him. Then that man approached the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan; having approached and paid homage to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, that man said to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan: "Venerable sir, yesterday evening meat arose, and a portion of it was set aside for the master. This boy, venerable sir, waking in the night at the time of dawn, cried out, 'Give me meat!' — and the master's portion was given to the boy. Venerable sir, what shall be brought for a kahāpaṇa?"
"Has the kahāpaṇa been relinquished to me, friend?"
"Yes, venerable sir, it has been relinquished."
"Then give me that very kahāpaṇa, friend."
Then that man, having given the kahāpaṇa to the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan, complained, criticized, and spread it about: "Just as we accept money (rūpiya), even so these ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, accept money!"
Bhikkhus heard that man complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How can the Venerable Upananda the Sakyan accept money?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Is it true, as they say, Upananda, that you accept money?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "How can you, foolish man, accept money? This, foolish man, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those already confident …. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
"Whatever bhikkhu should take gold or silver, or have it taken, or consent to its being deposited for him: this entails relinquishment with confession (nissaggiya pācittiya)."
