[47] Now at that time the Blessed One had entered the village for alms. The Venerable Udāyi had been left behind as keeper of the dwelling. Then the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā approached the Venerable Udāyi; having approached, she said this to the Venerable Udāyi: "Where, venerable sir, is the Blessed One?"
"The Blessed One, sister, has entered the village for alms."
"Give this meat, venerable sir, to the Blessed One."
"The Blessed One, sister, has been satisfied by you with meat. If you were to give me your inner robe (antaravāsaka), then I too would be satisfied — with the inner robe."
"Venerable sir, we who are women obtain things only with difficulty, and this is my last robe, the fifth; I will not give it."
"Just as, sister, a man who has given away an elephant would relinquish the girth as well, even so, sister, having given meat to the Blessed One, relinquish your inner robe to me."
Then the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā, being pressed by the Venerable Udāyi, gave the inner robe and went to the nuns' quarters. The bhikkhunīs who were receiving the bowl and robe of the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā said this to the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā: "Where, lady, is your inner robe?" The bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā informed the bhikkhunīs of this matter. The bhikkhunīs looked down upon, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can master Udāyi accept a robe from the hand of a bhikkhunī? Women obtain things only with difficulty." Then those bhikkhunīs informed the bhikkhus of this matter.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … they looked down upon, criticized, and spread it about: "How can the Venerable Udāyi accept a robe from the hand of a bhikkhunī?" Then those bhikkhus informed the Blessed One of this matter. …
"Is it true, Udāyi, as they say, that you accepted a robe from the hand of a bhikkhunī?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
"Is she a relation of yours, Udāyi, or not a relation?"
"She is not a relation, Blessed One."
"One who is not a relation, foolish man (moghapurisa), does not know what is proper or improper, what is present or lacking, for a woman who is not a relation. And yet in such a case you, foolish man, would accept a robe from the hand of a bhikkhunī who is not a relation! This, foolish man, is neither for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those who have confidence. … And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada):
'Should any bhikkhu accept a robe from the hand of a bhikkhunī who is not a relation, it entails relinquishment with confession (nissaggiya pācittiya).'"
And thus this training rule was laid down by the Blessed One for the bhikkhus.
