[48] Now at that time bhikkhus, being scrupulous, did not accept robe-cloth given in exchange (pārivaṭṭakacīvara) from bhikkhunīs. The bhikkhunīs complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can the venerable ones not accept robe-cloth in exchange from us?" The bhikkhus heard those bhikkhunīs complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that origin and that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow the accepting of what is given in exchange among the five — a bhikkhu, a bhikkhunī, a sikkhamānā, a sāmaṇera, and a sāmaṇerī; bhikkhus, I allow the accepting of what is given in exchange among these five. And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule: 'Should any bhikkhu accept robe-cloth from the hand of a bhikkhunī who is not a relative, except in exchange, it entails nissaggiya pācittiya.'"
