[109] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū) engaged in various kinds of trafficking in money (rūpiyasaṃvohāra). People criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How can the ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, engage in various kinds of trafficking in money, just like householders who enjoy sensual pleasures?"
The bhikkhus heard those people criticizing, complaining, and spreading it about. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus engage in various kinds of trafficking in money?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that you engage in various kinds of trafficking in money?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How can you, foolish men (moghapurisā), engage in various kinds of trafficking in money? This, foolish men, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those already confident …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Should any bhikkhu engage in various kinds of trafficking in money, it is an offense entailing expiation with forfeiture (nissaggiya pācittiya)."
