[189] **Clan (gotta)** means: there are two clans — the low clan and the exalted clan. **The low clan** means the Bhāradvāja clan; or else whatever clan is disdained, despised, scorned, treated with contempt, and not held in esteem in this or that district — this is called the low clan. **The exalted clan** means the Gotama clan, the Moggallāna clan, the Kaccāyana clan, the Vāseṭṭha clan; or else whatever clan is not disdained, not despised, not scorned, not treated with contempt, and held in esteem in this or that district — this is called the exalted clan.
