[32] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now on that occasion out-of-season robe-cloth (akālacīvara) had accrued to a certain bhikkhu. That robe-cloth, when being made up, was not sufficient for him. Then that bhikkhu, having stretched out that robe-cloth, smoothed it again and again. The Blessed One, while walking on a tour of the lodgings, saw that bhikkhu stretching out that robe-cloth and smoothing it again and again; and having seen him, he approached that bhikkhu and, having approached, said this to that bhikkhu: "Why, bhikkhu, do you stretch out this robe-cloth and smooth it again and again?"
"Venerable sir, this out-of-season robe-cloth has accrued to me, and when being made up it is not sufficient; therefore I stretch out this robe-cloth and smooth it again and again."
"But have you, bhikkhu, any expectation of [further] robe-cloth?"
"I have, Blessed One."
Then the Blessed One, on that ground, on that occasion, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow one, having accepted out-of-season robe-cloth, to lay it aside in expectation of [further] robe-cloth."
