[379] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the bhikkhus of the group of seventeen were companions. When they stayed, they stayed together; when they departed, they departed together. Having spread out bedding in a certain dwelling (vihāra) belonging to the Saṅgha, when departing they neither put it away nor had it put away, and they departed without informing anyone. The lodging (senāsana) was eaten by termites.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "How can the bhikkhus of the group of seventeen, having spread out bedding in a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha, when departing neither put it away nor have it put away, and depart without informing anyone, so that the lodging is eaten by termites?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
Then the Blessed One questioned the bhikkhus: "Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the bhikkhus of the group of seventeen, having spread out bedding in a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha, when departing neither put it away nor had it put away, and departed without informing anyone, so that the lodging was eaten by termites?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How, bhikkhus, can those foolish men (moghapurisā), having spread out bedding in a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha, when departing neither put it away nor have it put away, and depart without informing anyone, so that the lodging is eaten by termites? This, bhikkhus, is not for the gaining of confidence by those without confidence … And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Whatever bhikkhu, having spread out bedding, or having had it spread out, in a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha, when departing should neither put it away nor have it put away, or should go without informing anyone, there is an offense of pācittiya."
