[466] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery. Now at that time the former wife (purāṇadutiyikā) of the Venerable Udāyi had gone forth among the bhikkhunīs. That bhikkhunī came frequently into the presence of the Venerable Udāyi, and the Venerable Udāyi too went frequently into the presence of that bhikkhunī. Now at that time the Venerable Udāyi sat down in private with that bhikkhunī, one alone with one alone.
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … became annoyed, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can the Venerable Udāyi sit down in private with a bhikkhunī, one alone with one alone?" …
"Is it true, as they say, Udāyi, that you sat down in private with a bhikkhunī, one alone with one alone?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "How indeed can you, foolish man, sit down in private with a bhikkhunī, one alone with one alone? This, foolish man, is neither for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those already confident …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
"Whatever bhikkhu should sit down in private with a bhikkhunī, one alone with one alone, there is an offense of expiation (pācittiya)."
