[552] **"Whatever":** whoever, of whatever sort … **"Bhikkhu":** … this is the bhikkhu intended in this sense. **"Invited"** means: invited with any one of the five foods. **"With a meal"** means: he is one with a meal by reason of that [food] to which he was invited. A bhikkhu **"who is present"** means: it is possible to enter having taken leave of him. A bhikkhu **"who is not present"** means: it is not possible to enter having taken leave of him. **"Before the meal"** means: he has not yet eaten that [food] to which he was invited. **"After the meal"** means: that [food] to which he was invited has been eaten, even if only with the tip of a blade of kusa grass. **"Family"** means: there are four families — a khattiya family, a brahmin family, a vessa family, a sudda family. **"Should engage in visiting among families":** for one stepping into the precincts (upacāra) of another's house, there is an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). He crosses the threshold with the first foot: an offense of dukkaṭa. He crosses with the second foot: an offense of pācittiya. **"Except at the proper occasion":** setting aside the occasion. **"The occasion of giving robes"** means: when the kaṭhina has not been spread, the last month of the rains; when the kaṭhina has been spread, five months. **"The occasion of making robes"** means: while a robe is being made.
