[564] "Whoever" means: whoever, of whatever sort … "Bhikkhu" means: … this is the one intended in this meaning as "bhikkhu."
"Marched out" (uyyuttā) means: an army that, having departed from a village, is either encamped or has set out on the march.
"Army" (senā) means: elephants, horses, chariots, infantry. An elephant unit consists of twelve men; a horse unit of three men; a chariot unit of four men; four men with arrows in hand constitute infantry.
If he goes to see it, there is an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Where, standing, he sees it, there is an offence of expiation (pācittiya). Having left the range of sight (dassanūpacāra), he looks again and again: an offence of expiation.
"Except for a suitable reason" means: setting aside a reason of such a kind.
