Vinayapiṭaka · Bhikkhu Vibhaṅga (2) · Vol. 2 · Section 59

[59] **"If … that [bhikkhu]"** refers to the bhikkhu whose robe has been snatched away. **"Not a relative" (aññātaka)** means: one not connected through the mother or through the father back through seven generations of paternal ancestry. **"Householder" (gahapati)** means: whoever dwells in a house. **"Householder's wife" (gahapatānī)** means: whatever woman dwells in a house. **"With many robe-cloths"** means: with numerous robe-cloths. **"Should invite him to take"** means: [saying,] "Take as much as you wish." **"The bhikkhu may accept from them robe-cloth amounting at most to an inner and an upper robe"** means: if three [robes] have been lost, two may be accepted; if two have been lost, one may be accepted; if one has been lost, none [1] should be accepted. **"If he should accept more than that"** means: he asks for more than that — in the effort, [there is an offense of] wrong-doing (dukkaṭa); upon obtaining it, it becomes subject to forfeiture (nissaggiya). It is to be forfeited to a Saṅgha, to a group, or to an individual. "And thus, bhikkhus, it should be forfeited … 'Venerable sirs, this robe-cloth of mine, asked for beyond that [limit] from an unrelated householder [2], is subject to forfeiture. I forfeit it to the Saṅgha.' … 'should give …' … 'should give …' … 'I give [this] to the venerable one.'"
