[592] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Kosambī, in Ghosita's Park (Ghositārāma). Now at that time the Venerable Channa was engaging in improper conduct (anācāra). The bhikkhus spoke thus: "Friend Channa, do not act in such a way; that is not allowable." Out of disrespect (anādariya), he went on doing it just the same. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … they were annoyed, criticized, and complained: "How indeed can the Venerable Channa act out of disrespect?" …
"Is it true, as they say, Channa, that you act out of disrespect?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "How indeed can you, foolish man, act out of disrespect? This, foolish man, is not conducive to the confidence of those without confidence, nor to the increase of those who have confidence …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada): 'In disrespect, there is an offence of pācittiya.'"
