[627] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Now at that time the bhikkhus of the group of seventeen had not put away their requisites. The bhikkhus of the group of six hid the bowls and also the robes of the group-of-seventeen bhikkhus. The group-of-seventeen bhikkhus said this to the group-of-six bhikkhus: "Friends, give us our bowls and robes." The group-of-six bhikkhus laughed. The others wept. The bhikkhus said thus: "Why, friends, do you weep?" "Friends, these group-of-six bhikkhus are hiding our bowls and also our robes." Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … they took offense, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How indeed can the group-of-six bhikkhus hide the bowls and robes of bhikkhus?" … "Is it true, bhikkhus, as is said, that you hide the bowls and robes of bhikkhus?" "It is true, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed can you, foolish men, hide the bowls and robes of bhikkhus? This, foolish men, is not conducive to the confidence of those without confidence, nor to the increase of confidence of those already confident …" "And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada): 'Whatever bhikkhu should hide, or cause to be hidden, a bhikkhu's bowl, or robe, or sitting cloth (nisīdana), or needle case, or waistband, even if only seeking a laugh,¹ there is an offense of expiation (pācittiya).'"
