[669] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's monastery (ārāma). Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus knowingly ate together with, lived together with, and shared a sleeping place with the bhikkhu Ariṭṭha, one who spoke thus, who had not acted in accordance with the rule (akaṭānudhamma), and who had not relinquished that view. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, denounced, and spread it about: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus knowingly eat together with, live together with, and share a sleeping place with the bhikkhu Ariṭṭha, one who speaks thus, who has not acted in accordance with the rule, and who has not relinquished that view?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, that you knowingly eat together with, live together with, and share a sleeping place with the bhikkhu Ariṭṭha, one who speaks thus, who has not acted in accordance with the rule, and who has not relinquished that view?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "Foolish men, how can you knowingly eat together with, live together with, and share a sleeping place with the bhikkhu Ariṭṭha, one who speaks thus, who has not acted in accordance with the rule, and who has not relinquished that view? This, foolish men, is not for the arousing of faith in those without faith, nor for the increase of faith in those who have it …
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule (sikkhāpada): 'Should any bhikkhu knowingly eat together with, or live together with, or share a sleeping place with a bhikkhu who speaks thus, who has not acted in accordance with the rule, and who has not relinquished that view, it is an offense of expiation (pācittiya).'"
