[723] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Veḷuvana, the squirrels' feeding ground (Kalandakanivāpa). Now at that time the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta was assigning lodgings for the Saṅgha and designating meals. And that venerable one's robe was worn thin. Now at that time a certain robe had accrued to the Saṅgha. Then the Saṅgha gave that robe to the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta. The group-of-six bhikkhus criticized, complained, and spread it about, saying: "The bhikkhus divert gain belonging to the Saṅgha according to friendship."
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, complained, and spread it about: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus, having given a robe together with a united Saṅgha, afterwards take to criticizing?" …
"Is it true, bhikkhus, that you, having given a robe together with a united Saṅgha, afterwards took to criticizing?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How can you, foolish men, having given a robe together with a united Saṅgha, afterwards take to criticizing? This, foolish men, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those already confident …
"And thus, bhikkhus, should you recite this training rule:
"Should any bhikkhu, having given a robe together with a united Saṅgha, afterwards take to criticizing, saying, 'The bhikkhus divert gain belonging to the Saṅgha according to friendship,' there is an offense of pācittiya."
