[784] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Rājagaha, in the Veḷuvana, the Squirrels' Feeding Ground (Kalandakanivāpa). Now at that time bhikkhus (bhikkhu), having been invited, were eating among families. The bhikkhunīs of the group of six (chabbaggiyā) stood giving directions on behalf of the bhikkhus of the group of six: "Give curry here; give rice here." The bhikkhus of the group of six ate as much as they wanted; the other bhikkhus did not eat as they wished. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … looked down upon, criticized, and spread it about: "How indeed can the bhikkhus of the group of six not restrain the bhikkhunīs who are giving directions?" …
"Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that you do not restrain the bhikkhunīs who are giving directions?"
"It is true, Blessed One."
The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked them: "How indeed can you, foolish men (moghapurisa), not restrain the bhikkhunīs who are giving directions? This, foolish men, is not for the confidence of those without confidence, nor for the increase of those who have confidence …"
"And thus, bhikkhus, you should recite this training rule:
'Now, should bhikkhus, having been invited, be eating among families, and should a bhikkhunī stand there as one giving directions: "Give curry here; give rice here," that bhikkhunī is to be dismissed by those bhikkhus: "Withdraw, sister, while the bhikkhus are eating." If it should not occur to even a single bhikkhu to dismiss that bhikkhunī: "Withdraw, sister, while the bhikkhus are eating," then it is to be acknowledged by those bhikkhus: "Friends, we have fallen into a blameworthy thing, unsuitable, which ought to be acknowledged (pāṭidesanīya); we acknowledge it."'"
