[828] Origin at Sāvatthī. Now on that occasion the group-of-six bhikkhus (bhikkhu), when receiving almsfood, received only a large quantity of curry (sūpa). … "I shall receive almsfood with curry in due proportion" — thus should the training be undertaken.
**Curry** means: there are two kinds of curry — mung-bean curry and māsa-bean curry — such as can be conveyed by the hand. Almsfood should be received with curry in due proportion. Whoever, out of disrespect, receives only a large quantity of curry: an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offense: if it is unintentional; if done inadvertently, without mindfulness (sati); if one does not know; for one who is ill; in the case of sauces of various flavors; from relatives; from those who have given an invitation (pavārita); when receiving for the sake of another; when obtained with one's own resources; in emergencies; for one who is insane; for the first offender (ādikammika).
