[833] Origin at Sāvatthī (Sāvatthīnidānaṃ). Now at that time the bhikkhus of the group of six, while eating almsfood, ate a great deal of the curry alone. … "I shall eat almsfood with curry in equal proportion" — thus is the training (sikkhā) to be done.
**Curry (sūpa)**: there are two curries — mung-bean curry and black-gram curry — that which can be conveyed by the hand. Almsfood should be eaten with curry in equal proportion. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats a great deal of the curry alone: an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offence (anāpatti): if it is unintentional; if he is unmindful; if he does not know; if he is ill; in the case of various delicacies (rasarasa); in the case of relatives; in the case of those who have given invitation (pavārita); when it is for the sake of another; when it is by means of his own wealth; in emergencies; if he is mad; if he is the first offender (ādikammika).
