[845] Setting at Sāvatthī. Now at that time the bhikkhus of the group of six ate biting off pieces of the mouthful … "I will not eat biting off pieces of the mouthful" — this is a training to be observed.
One should not eat biting off pieces of the mouthful. Whatever bhikkhu, out of disrespect, eats biting off pieces of the mouthful, commits an offense of wrongdoing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offense: if it is unintentional; if he is absent-minded; if he does not know; if he is ill; in the case of hard foods (khajjaka); in the case of fruits of various kinds; in the case of condiments (uttaribhaṅga); in emergencies; if he is mad; if he is the first offender.
