[847] Origin at Sāvatthī. Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū) ate shaking the hand … "I will not eat shaking the hand (hatthaniddhūnaka)" — thus the training is to be undertaken.
One should not eat shaking the hand. Whoever, out of disrespect, eats shaking the hand commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa).
There is no offence: if it is unintentional; if he is unmindful; if he does not know; if he is ill; if he shakes the hand while discarding scraps; in emergencies; if he is mad; if he is the first offender (ādikammika).
