[379] Bhikkhus, possessing two qualities, a fool, incompetent, an untrue person (asappurisa) maintains himself dug up and injured; he is blameworthy and subject to reproach by the wise, and he generates much demerit (apuñña). Which two? Without investigating and without probing, he speaks praise of one deserving blame; without investigating and without probing, he speaks blame of one deserving praise. Possessing these two qualities, bhikkhus, a fool, incompetent, an untrue person maintains himself dug up and injured; he is blameworthy and subject to reproach by the wise, and he generates much demerit.
Bhikkhus, possessing two qualities, a wise man, competent, a true person (sappurisa) maintains himself undug and uninjured; he is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise, and he generates much merit (puñña). Which two? Having investigated and having probed, he speaks blame of one deserving blame; having investigated and having probed, he speaks praise of one deserving praise. Possessing these two qualities, bhikkhus, a wise man, competent, a true person maintains himself undug and uninjured; he is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise, and he generates much merit.
