[380] Bhikkhus, possessing two qualities (dhammā), the fool, incompetent, an untrue person (asappurisa), maintains himself maimed and injured; he is blameworthy and subject to reproach by the wise, and he generates much demerit (apuñña). Which two? Without investigating and without scrutinizing, he displays confidence in a matter that does not inspire confidence; without investigating and without scrutinizing, he displays lack of confidence in a matter that inspires confidence. Possessing these two qualities, bhikkhus, the fool, incompetent, an untrue person, maintains himself maimed and injured; he is blameworthy and subject to reproach by the wise, and he generates much demerit.
Bhikkhus, possessing two qualities, the wise person, competent, a true person (sappurisa), maintains himself unmaimed and uninjured; he is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise, and he generates much merit (puñña). Which two? Having investigated and having scrutinized, he displays lack of confidence in a matter that does not inspire confidence; having investigated and having scrutinized, he displays confidence in a matter that inspires confidence. Possessing these two qualities, bhikkhus, the wise person, competent, a true person, maintains himself unmaimed and uninjured; he is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise, and he generates much merit.
