[448] 9. Bhikkhus, possessing three qualities, the fool, incompetent, an untrue person, maintains himself maimed and injured; he is blameworthy and subject to reproach by the wise, and he generates much demerit. Which three? Misconduct by body, misconduct by speech, misconduct by mind. Bhikkhus, possessing these three qualities, the fool, incompetent, an untrue person, maintains himself maimed and injured; he is blameworthy and subject to reproach by the wise, and he generates much demerit.
Bhikkhus, possessing three qualities, the wise person, competent, a true person, maintains himself unmaimed and uninjured; he is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise, and he generates much merit. Which three? Good conduct by body, good conduct by speech, good conduct by mind. Bhikkhus, possessing these three qualities, the wise person, competent, a true person, maintains himself unmaimed and uninjured; he is blameless and beyond reproach by the wise, and he generates much merit.
