[447] 8. Bhikkhus, one possessing three qualities (dhamma) should be known as a fool. Which three? Afflictive bodily action (kāyakamma), afflictive verbal action (vacīkamma), and afflictive mental action (manokamma). Bhikkhus, one possessing these three qualities should be known as a fool.
Bhikkhus, one possessing three qualities should be known as a wise man (paṇḍita). Which three? Unafflictive bodily action, unafflictive verbal action, and unafflictive mental action. Bhikkhus, one possessing these three qualities should be known as a wise man.
Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves thus: "Those three qualities possessing which one should be known as a fool — having scrupulously avoided those three qualities, those three qualities possessing which one should be known as a wise man — undertaking those three qualities, we shall conduct ourselves accordingly." Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train yourselves.
