[484] Bhikkhus, these three things have been prescribed by the wise, prescribed by good persons (sappurisa). What three? Giving (dāna), bhikkhus, has been prescribed by the wise, prescribed by good persons. Going forth (pabbajjā), bhikkhus, has been prescribed by the wise, prescribed by good persons. Attending upon one's mother and father, bhikkhus, has been prescribed by the wise, prescribed by good persons. These, bhikkhus, are the three things prescribed by the wise, prescribed by good persons. Giving has been prescribed by the good, along with harmlessness, restraint, and self-taming, and attending upon mother and father and upon the peaceful ones who live the holy life. These are the practices of the good which the wise person should pursue; the noble one, accomplished in vision, goes to a world that is blissful.
