[19] Bhikkhus, there are these four ways of taking a wrong course (agatigamana). What four? One takes the wrong course of desire (chandāgati); one takes the wrong course of hatred (dosāgati); one takes the wrong course of delusion (mohāgati); one takes the wrong course of fear (bhayāgati). These, bhikkhus, are the four ways of taking a wrong course.
Whoever transgresses the Dhamma
through desire, hatred, fear, or delusion,
his fame wanes,
like the moon in the dark fortnight.
Bhikkhus, there are these four ways of not taking a wrong course. What four? One does not take the wrong course of desire; one does not take the wrong course of hatred; one does not take the wrong course of delusion; one does not take the wrong course of fear. These, bhikkhus, are the four ways of not taking a wrong course.
Whoever does not transgress the Dhamma
through desire, hatred, fear, or delusion,
his fame waxes full,
like the moon in the bright fortnight.
