[20] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu who assigns meals (bhattuddesaka), possessed of four qualities, is deposited in hell as if carried and put there. Of what four? He takes a wrong course out of desire (chandāgati), he takes a wrong course out of hatred (dosāgati), he takes a wrong course out of delusion (mohāgati), he takes a wrong course out of fear (bhayāgati). Bhikkhus, an assigner of meals possessed of these four qualities is deposited in hell as if carried and put there. Bhikkhus, an assigner of meals, possessed of four qualities, is deposited in heaven as if carried and put there. Of what four? He does not take a wrong course out of desire, he does not take a wrong course out of hatred, he does not take a wrong course out of delusion, he does not take a wrong course out of fear. Bhikkhus, an assigner of meals possessed of these four qualities is deposited in heaven as if carried and put there.
Whatever people are unrestrained among sensual pleasures,
unrighteous and without reverence for the Dhamma,
going astray out of desire, out of hatred, and out of fear —
such a one is called the dregs of an assembly:
so it has been declared by the Ascetic who knows.
Therefore those true persons are worthy of praise
who, established in the Dhamma, do no evil deed,
not going astray out of desire, out of hatred, or out of fear —
such a one is called the cream of an assembly:
so it has been declared by the Ascetic who knows.
