[203] "Bhikkhus, I shall teach you the untrue person (asappurisa) and the one still more untrue than the untrue person; the true person (sappurisa) and the one still more true than the true person. Listen to that. …
"And what, bhikkhus, is the untrue person? Here, bhikkhus, someone destroys life (pāṇātipāta), takes what is not given (adinnādāna), engages in sexual misconduct (kāmesu micchācāra), speaks falsely (musāvāda), speaks maliciously (pisuṇavācā), speaks harshly (pharusavācā), and indulges in frivolous talk (samphappalāpa). This, bhikkhus, is called the untrue person.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the one still more untrue than the untrue person? Here, bhikkhus, someone himself destroys life and encourages others in the destruction of life; he himself takes what is not given and encourages others in taking what is not given; he himself engages in sexual misconduct and encourages others in sexual misconduct; he himself speaks falsely and encourages others in false speech; he himself speaks maliciously and encourages others in malicious speech; he himself speaks harshly and encourages others in harsh speech; he himself indulges in frivolous talk and encourages others in frivolous talk. This, bhikkhus, is called the one still more untrue than the untrue person.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the true person? Here, bhikkhus, someone abstains from the destruction of life, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from sexual misconduct, abstains from false speech, abstains from malicious speech, abstains from harsh speech, abstains from frivolous talk. This, bhikkhus, is called the true person.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the one still more true than the true person? Here, bhikkhus, someone himself abstains from the destruction of life and encourages others in abstention (veramaṇī) from the destruction of life; he himself abstains from taking what is not given and encourages others in abstention from taking what is not given; he himself abstains from sexual misconduct and encourages others in abstention from sexual misconduct; he himself abstains from false speech and encourages others in abstention from false speech; he himself abstains from malicious speech and encourages others in abstention from malicious speech; he himself abstains from harsh speech and encourages others in abstention from harsh speech; he himself abstains from frivolous talk and encourages others in abstention from frivolous talk.
