[204] Bhikkhus, I shall teach you the untrue person (asappurisa) and the person more untrue than the untrue person; the true person (sappurisa) and the person truer than the true person. Listen to that. …
And what, bhikkhus, is the untrue person? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person destroys life (pāṇātipātī) … is covetous (abhijjhālū), has a mind of ill will (byāpannacitta), holds wrong view (micchādiṭṭhika). This, bhikkhus, is called the untrue person.
And what, bhikkhus, is the person more untrue than the untrue person? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person himself destroys life and encourages another in the destruction of life … he himself is covetous and encourages another in covetousness; he himself has a mind of ill will and encourages another in ill will; he himself holds wrong view and encourages another in wrong view. This, bhikkhus, is called the person more untrue than the untrue person.
And what, bhikkhus, is the true person? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person abstains from the destruction of life … is without covetousness, has a mind without ill will, holds right view (sammādiṭṭhika). This, bhikkhus, is called the true person.
And what, bhikkhus, is the person truer than the true person? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person himself abstains from the destruction of life and encourages another in abstinence from the destruction of life … he himself is without covetousness and encourages another in non-covetousness; he himself has a mind without ill will and encourages another in non-ill will; he himself holds right view and encourages another in right view.
