[65] Bhikkhus, these four persons are found existing in the world. Which four? One who takes his measure by form and gains confidence through form; one who takes his measure by voice and gains confidence through voice; one who takes his measure by austerity and gains confidence through austerity; one who takes his measure by the Dhamma and gains confidence through the Dhamma. These, bhikkhus, are the four persons found existing in the world.
Those who measured by form,
and those who followed after voice,
come under the sway of desire and lust —
they do not know that person.
He neither knows the internal
nor sees the external;
the fool, obstructed on every side,
is indeed carried away by voice.
He does not know the internal,
but clearly sees the external;
seeing fruit outwardly,
he too is carried away by voice.
He knows the internal
and clearly sees the external;
(thus) seeing with vision unobstructed by hindrances,
he is not carried away by voice.
