[12] Bhikkhus, there are these five powers of a learner (sekhabala). What five? The power of faith (saddhābala), the power of moral shame (hiribala), the power of moral dread (ottappabala), the power of energy (vīriyabala), and the power of wisdom (paññābala). These, bhikkhus, are the five powers of a learner.
Bhikkhus, among these five powers of a learner, this is the foremost, this is what holds them together, this is their point of convergence, namely, the power of wisdom. Just as, bhikkhus, in a peaked house this is the foremost part, this is what holds it together, this is its point of convergence, namely, the peak; even so, bhikkhus, among these five powers of a learner, this is the foremost, this is what holds them together, this is their point of convergence, namely, the power of wisdom.
Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train thus: "We shall be possessed of the power of faith, a power of a learner; of the power of moral shame ... of the power of moral dread ... of the power of energy ... we shall be possessed of the power of wisdom, a power of a learner." Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train.
