[2] Bhikkhus, there are these five powers of one in training (sekhabala). What five? The power of faith (saddhā), the power of moral shame (hiri), the power of moral dread (ottappa), the power of energy, and the power of wisdom (paññā). And what, bhikkhus, is the power of faith? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) has faith; he has faith in the awakening of the Tathāgata thus: "That Blessed One is indeed an Arahant, fully self-enlightened, perfect in true knowledge and conduct, well-gone, knower of the world, unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One." This, bhikkhus, is called the power of faith. And what, bhikkhus, is the power of moral shame? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple has moral shame; he is ashamed of misconduct by body, misconduct by speech, and misconduct by mind; he is ashamed of acquiring evil, unwholesome states. This, bhikkhus, is called the power of moral shame. And what, bhikkhus, is the power of moral dread? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple has moral dread; he dreads misconduct by body, misconduct by speech, and misconduct by mind; he dreads acquiring evil, unwholesome states. This, bhikkhus, is called the power of moral dread. And what, bhikkhus, is the power of energy? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple dwells with energy aroused for the abandoning of unwholesome states and the acquisition of wholesome states; he is strong, firm in exertion, not shirking the responsibility of cultivating wholesome states. This, bhikkhus, is called the power of energy. And what, bhikkhus, is the power of wisdom? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple is wise; he is endowed with the wisdom that discerns arising and passing away, which is noble and penetrative, leading rightly to the complete destruction of suffering (dukkha). This, bhikkhus, is called the power of wisdom. These, bhikkhus, are the five powers of one in training. Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train thus: "We will be endowed with the power of faith, a power of one in training; with the power of moral shame …; with the power of moral dread …; with the power of energy …; we will be endowed with the power of wisdom, a power of one in training." Thus indeed, bhikkhus, should you train.
