[3] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities dwells in suffering (dukkha) in this very life — with distress, with despair, with fever — and with the breakup of the body, after death, a bad destination is to be expected. Which five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is without faith (saddhā), is without moral shame (hiri), is without moral dread (ottappa), is lazy, and is unwise. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of these five qualities dwells in suffering in this very life — with distress, with despair, with fever — and with the breakup of the body, after death, a bad destination is to be expected.
Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities dwells in happiness in this very life — without distress, without despair, without fever — and with the breakup of the body, after death, a good destination is to be expected. Which five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has faith, has moral shame, has moral dread, has aroused energy (vīriya), and is wise. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of these five qualities dwells in happiness in this very life — without distress, without despair, without fever — and with the breakup of the body, after death, a good destination is to be expected.
