[126] Bhikkhus, these five things (dhammas) are conducive to the shortening of life. What five? One does what is unsuitable; one does not know moderation in what is suitable; one eats food that is hard to digest (apariṇatabhojī); one is immoral (dussīla); and one has bad friends (pāpamitta). These, bhikkhus, are the five things conducive to the shortening of life.
Bhikkhus, these five things are conducive to long life. What five? One does what is suitable; one knows moderation in what is suitable; one eats food that is easy to digest (pariṇatabhojī); one is virtuous (sīlavā); and one has good friends (kalyāṇamitta). These, bhikkhus, are the five things conducive to long life.
