[128] Bhikkhus, there are these five sufferings (dukkha) of an ascetic (samaṇa). What five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not content (asantuṭṭha) with any kind of robe whatsoever; he is not content with any kind of almsfood whatsoever; he is not content with any kind of lodging whatsoever; he is not content with any kind of medicinal requisites for the sick whatsoever; and he lives the holy life (brahmacariya) without delight. These, bhikkhus, are the five sufferings of an ascetic.
Bhikkhus, there are these five happinesses of an ascetic. What five? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is content with any kind of robe whatsoever; he is content with any kind of almsfood whatsoever; he is content with any kind of lodging whatsoever; he is content with any kind of medicinal requisites for the sick whatsoever; and he lives the holy life with delight. These, bhikkhus, are the five happinesses of an ascetic.
