[227] Bhikkhus, there are these five dangers (ādīnava) in riches (bhoga). What five? Riches are shared with fire; riches are shared with water; riches are shared with kings; riches are shared with thieves; riches are shared with unloved heirs. These, bhikkhus, are the five dangers in riches. Bhikkhus, there are these five benefits (ānisaṃsa) in riches. What five? Relying on riches, a person makes himself happy and pleased, and properly maintains himself in happiness; he makes his mother and father happy and pleased, and properly maintains them in happiness; he makes his children, wife, slaves, workers, and servants happy and pleased, and properly maintains them in happiness; he makes his friends and companions happy and pleased, and properly maintains them in happiness; and he establishes for ascetics and brahmins an uplifting offering (dakkhiṇā) — one of heavenly benefit, ripening in happiness, conducive to heaven. These, bhikkhus, are the five benefits in riches.
