[249] Bhikkhus, there are these five dangers (ādīnava) in a charnel ground (sīvathikā). What five? It is impure; it is foul-smelling; it is fearsome; it is the abode of wild non-human beings; it is a place of weeping for many people. These, bhikkhus, are the five dangers in a charnel ground.
Even so, bhikkhus, there are these five dangers in a person who is like a charnel ground. What five? Here, bhikkhus, a certain person is possessed of impure bodily action (kāyakamma), possessed of impure verbal action (vacīkamma), possessed of impure mental action (manokamma). This, I say, is his impurity. Just as, bhikkhus, that charnel ground is impure, even so, bhikkhus, I say this person is like it.
Of him who is possessed of impure bodily action, possessed of impure verbal action, possessed of impure mental action, an evil report spreads abroad. This, I say, is his foul smell. Just as, bhikkhus, that charnel ground is foul-smelling, even so, bhikkhus, I say this person is like it.
His well-behaved fellows in the holy life avoid from afar that one who is possessed of impure bodily action, possessed of impure verbal action, possessed of impure mental action. This, I say, is his fearsomeness. Just as, bhikkhus, that charnel ground is fearsome, even so, bhikkhus, I say this person is like it.
He who is possessed of impure bodily action, possessed of impure verbal action, possessed of impure mental action dwells together with persons of the same kind. This, I say, is his being an abode of the wild. Just as, bhikkhus, that charnel ground is the abode of wild non-human beings, even so, bhikkhus, I say this person is like it.
His well-behaved fellows in the holy life, having seen him possessed of impure bodily action, possessed of impure verbal action, possessed of impure mental action, give way to complaint: "Oh, how painful (dukkha) it is for us, that we must dwell together with such persons!" This, I say, is the weeping over him. Just as, bhikkhus, that charnel ground is a place of weeping for many people, even so, bhikkhus, I say this person is like it.
These, bhikkhus, are the five dangers in a person who is like a charnel ground.
