[250] "Bhikkhus, there are these five dangers (ādīnava) in confidence placed in a person (puggalappasāda). What five?
The person in whom a person has complete confidence commits an offence (āpatti) of such a kind that the Saṅgha suspends him. It occurs to that one: 'This person who is dear and agreeable to me has been suspended by the Saṅgha.' He becomes one abounding in lack of confidence in bhikkhus; abounding in lack of confidence in bhikkhus, he does not associate with other bhikkhus; not associating with other bhikkhus, he does not hear the true Dhamma (saddhamma); not hearing the true Dhamma, he falls away from the true Dhamma. This, bhikkhus, is the first danger in confidence placed in a person.
Again, bhikkhus, the person in whom a person has complete confidence commits an offence of such a kind that the Saṅgha makes him sit at the end. It occurs to that one: 'This person who is dear and agreeable to me has been made by the Saṅgha to sit at the end.' He becomes one abounding in lack of confidence in bhikkhus; abounding in lack of confidence in bhikkhus, he does not associate with other bhikkhus; not associating with other bhikkhus, he does not hear the true Dhamma; not hearing the true Dhamma, he falls away from the true Dhamma. This, bhikkhus, is the second danger in confidence placed in a person.
Again, bhikkhus, the person in whom a person has complete confidence departs for another region … he disrobes … he dies. It occurs to that one: 'This person who is dear and agreeable to me has died.' He does not associate with other bhikkhus; not associating with other bhikkhus, he does not hear the true Dhamma; not hearing the true Dhamma, he falls away from the true Dhamma. This, bhikkhus, is the fifth danger in confidence placed in a person.
These, bhikkhus, are the five dangers in confidence placed in a person."
