[350] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of six qualities is incapable of attaining a wholesome quality (kusala dhamma) not yet attained, or of increasing a wholesome quality already attained. What six? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is not skilled in gain (āya), is not skilled in loss (apāya), is not skilled in means (upāya); he does not generate zeal (chanda) for the attainment of wholesome qualities not yet attained; he does not guard wholesome qualities already attained; and he does not accomplish [his task] through persistent action (sātaccakiriyā). Possessed of these six qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is incapable of attaining a wholesome quality not yet attained, or of increasing a wholesome quality already attained.
