[376] "Bhikkhus, there are these three kinds of existence (bhava) to be abandoned, and three trainings (sikkhā) in which one should train. What are the three kinds of existence to be abandoned? Sense-sphere existence (kāmabhava), form-sphere existence (rūpabhava), and formless-sphere existence (arūpabhava). These are the three kinds of existence to be abandoned. In what three trainings should one train? In the training in higher morality (adhisīlasikkhā), in the training in higher mentality (adhicittasikkhā), and in the training in higher wisdom (adhipaññāsikkhā). In these three trainings one should train. "When, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu has abandoned these three kinds of existence and has trained in these three trainings, this bhikkhu is called one who has cut off craving (taṇhā), undone the fetter, and, by the complete penetration of conceit (māna), made an end of suffering (dukkha)."
