[169] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is faithful but not virtuous; thus he is incomplete with respect to that factor. He should fulfil that factor, thinking: "How can I be both faithful and virtuous?" But when, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is both faithful and virtuous, then he is complete with respect to that factor.
Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is faithful and virtuous, but not learned … learned, but not a speaker on the Dhamma … a speaker on the Dhamma, but not one who frequents assemblies … one who frequents assemblies, but not one who teaches the Dhamma to the assembly with confidence … one who teaches the Dhamma to the assembly with confidence, and one who dwells having contacted with the body those peaceful liberations (vimokkha) that are formless, transcending forms, but not one who, with the destruction of the taints (āsava), realizes for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), and, having entered upon it, dwells therein — thus he is incomplete with respect to that factor. He should fulfil that factor, thinking: "How can I be faithful, virtuous, learned, a speaker on the Dhamma, one who frequents assemblies, and one who teaches the Dhamma to the assembly with confidence; and how can I dwell having contacted with the body those peaceful liberations that are formless, transcending forms, and, with the destruction of the taints, realize for myself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and, having entered upon it, dwell therein?"
But when, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is faithful, virtuous, learned, a speaker on the Dhamma, one who frequents assemblies, and one who teaches the Dhamma to the assembly with confidence; and he dwells having contacted with the body those peaceful liberations that are formless, transcending forms; and, with the destruction of the taints … having realized … he enters upon it and dwells therein — thus he is complete with respect to that factor.
Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of these eight qualities is one who inspires confidence in every regard and is complete in every aspect.
