[175] There the Venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus … "Friends, a bhikkhu possessing six qualities is sufficient for himself and sufficient for others (alaṃ attano alaṃ paresaṃ). What six? Here, friends, a bhikkhu is quick to grasp wholesome dhammas; he is of a nature to retain the teachings he has heard; he examines the meaning of the teachings he has retained; having understood the meaning and understood the Dhamma, he is one who practices in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhammapaṭipanna); he is a good speaker with a good delivery, endowed with speech that is polished, clear, unfaltering, and conveying the meaning; and he is one who instructs, encourages, inspires, and gladdens his fellows in the holy life (sabrahmacārī). Possessing these six qualities, friends, a bhikkhu is sufficient for himself and sufficient for others."
