[152] (62) Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu possessed of six qualities is adequate for himself and adequate for others (alaṃ attano alaṃ paresaṃ). What six? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is quick to grasp (khippanisanti) wholesome dhammas; he is one who retains the dhammas he has heard; he examines the meaning of the dhammas he has retained; having understood the meaning and understood the dhamma, he is one who practises in accordance with the Dhamma (dhammānudhammapaṭipanna); he has lovely speech (kalyāṇavāca) and lovely enunciation, endowed with speech that is urbane, distinct, faultless, and conveying the meaning; and he is one who instructs, encourages, inspires, and gladdens his companions in the holy life (sabrahmacārī). Possessed of these six qualities, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is adequate for himself and adequate for others.
