[197] (Pali section ๑๐๗) Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu possesses eight qualities, lay followers, if they wish, may declare their confidence (pasāda) in him. What eight? He does not strive for the householders' loss of gains; he does not strive for the householders' harm; he does not abuse or revile householders; he does not divide householders from householders; he speaks in praise of the Buddha; he speaks in praise of the Dhamma; he speaks in praise of the Saṅgha; and they see him in a suitable resort (gocara). Bhikkhus, when a bhikkhu possesses these eight qualities, lay followers, if they wish, may declare their confidence in him.
