[37] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu who possesses seven qualities wields mastery over the mind (citta), and the bhikkhu is not himself carried along under the mind's mastery. What are the seven? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is skilled in concentration (samādhi); he is skilled in the attainment (samāpatti) of concentration; he is skilled in the maintenance (ṭhiti) of concentration; he is skilled in emergence (vuṭṭhāna) from concentration; he is skilled in the fitness (kallita) of concentration; he is skilled in the range (gocara) of concentration; he is skilled in the application (abhinīhāra) of concentration. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu who possesses these seven qualities wields mastery over the mind, and the bhikkhu is not himself carried along under the mind's mastery.
