[4] "Bhikkhus, there are these seven powers (bala). What seven? The power of faith (saddhā), the power of energy, the power of moral shame (hirī), the power of moral dread (ottappa), the power of mindfulness, the power of concentration (samādhi), and the power of wisdom (paññā).
"And what, bhikkhus, is the power of faith? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) has faith; he has faith in the awakening of the Tathāgata thus: 'Indeed, that Blessed One is an arahant, a fully self-enlightened one … the teacher of devas and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' This, bhikkhus, is called the power of faith.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the power of energy? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple dwells with energy aroused for the abandonment of unwholesome dhammas and for the acquisition of wholesome dhammas; he is strong, firm in exertion, not shirking the responsibility with regard to wholesome dhammas. This, bhikkhus, is called the power of energy.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the power of moral shame? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple has moral shame; he is ashamed of misconduct by body, misconduct by speech, and misconduct by mind; he is ashamed of attaining evil, unwholesome dhammas. This, bhikkhus, is called the power of moral shame.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the power of moral dread? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple has moral dread; he dreads misconduct by body, misconduct by speech, and misconduct by mind; he dreads attaining evil, unwholesome dhammas. This, bhikkhus, is called the power of moral dread.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the power of mindfulness? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple is mindful, endowed with supreme mindfulness and discernment (nepakka); he remembers and recollects even what was done long ago and what was said long ago. This, bhikkhus, is called the power of mindfulness.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the power of concentration? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple, secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna. This, bhikkhus, is called the power of concentration.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the power of wisdom? Here, bhikkhus, a noble disciple is wise, endowed with wisdom directed to arising and passing away, which is noble, penetrative, leading to the complete destruction of suffering (dukkha). This, bhikkhus, is called the power of wisdom.
"These, bhikkhus, are the seven powers.
The power of faith, the power of energy,
the powers of moral shame and moral dread,
the power of mindfulness, the power of concentration,
and wisdom, truly, as the seventh power —
strong with these, a bhikkhu who is wise lives happily.
He should investigate the Dhamma methodically;
he sees the meaning clearly with wisdom.
The liberation of his mind
is like the extinguishing of a lamp."
