[79] Bhikkhus, possessing seven qualities, an expert in the Discipline (vinayadhara) shines. What seven? He knows what is an offense (āpatti); he knows what is not an offense; he knows a light offense; he knows a grave offense; he recollects his manifold past abodes — that is, one birth, two births … — thus with their aspects and particulars he recollects his manifold past abodes; with the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human, … he understands beings as faring according to their kamma; with the destruction of the taints (āsava), … having realized it, he enters and dwells therein. Bhikkhus, possessing these seven qualities, an expert in the Discipline shines.
