[80] Then the Venerable Upāli approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down at one side. Sitting at one side, the Venerable Upāli said this to the Blessed One: "It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach me the Dhamma in brief, so that, having heard the Dhamma from the Blessed One, I might dwell alone, withdrawn, heedful, ardent, and resolute."
"Upāli, as to those things of which you might know: 'These things do not lead exclusively to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation (nirodha), to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna' — you should definitely hold, Upāli: 'This is not the Dhamma; this is not the Discipline; this is not the Teacher's instruction.' But as to those things of which you might know: 'These things lead exclusively to disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbāna' — you should definitely hold, Upāli: 'This is the Dhamma; this is the Discipline; this is the Teacher's instruction.'"
